Oakland County Regional Housing Partnership and Zoning Reform
Housing is a core planning issue and a hot topic across the state. Michigan’s Statewide Housing Plan, adopted by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) in 2022, notes that Oakland County has a backlog of existing and forecasted housing demand.
The MSHDA-supported Region L Housing Partnership (RHP) has established three work groups:
- Address homelessness
- Increase the spectrum and supply of housing that is attainable to Oakland County residents
- Build support for the changes needed to achieve accessible and affordable housing
The Housing Stock Workgroup is facilitating the implementation of the new housing needed to meet both existing and forecast demand in the county.
The supply and cost of housing is an issue everywhere, influenced by many factors, including local zoning. Region L is drawing on Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) tools to assess regulatory barriers that may hinder housing supply and choice. MAP will discuss its Zoning Reform Toolkit, Stories and Studies Guide, and a new Zoning Atlas tool to assess housing development opportunities.
